How many pairs of skis do you need? Saturday November 27, 2010 - Email this article to a friend One usually suffices most people. Well the top racers have over 100 and turn up for a training session with 35. For those of us who work out in the mountains it is usually 4 or 5. A recent article in The New York Times details the number of skis that US racers travel with. Julia Mancuso has been on about 40 pairs already this season. Ted Ligety 35. But they are dwarfed by Lindsey Vonn who has been provided with 125 pairs by her manfacturer, Head. "I will try everything and anything to be fast. I try men's skis, I try a lot of the men's setups, I'll try women's setups, I'll try everything," says Vonn. "I think I went through 30 boots this year. It's just a constant process of trying to find the next best ski." He or she is one of the most important people in the back up team. Getting the ski tuned and set up correctly is critical. But for most of us who have a few pairs it is more about the type of ski. At its simplest it probably breaks down to on piste and off piste. But then some of us want different on piste skis; maybe a pair of slalom ski and some longer radius GS ones. Then perhaps off piste we want some super fat ones or even rocker skis to sit along side ones that can be used OK on the piste. A good powder day on big fat skis is after all close to heaven. Then there's the park and maybe a set for touring. Or telemarking. And of course there are an old pair of rock skis for when the conditions are bad and we don't want to ruin any of our other pairs. Some people may want the odd snowboard or two as well. The picture below is the collection of a family of 4 who live in Verbier. The kids only have one pair.
